Union Meeting Location Changed

MDA Boot Drive

Local 561, in conjunction with LCFD and the City of Lake Charles, is gearing up for our annual Boot Drive.  Last year we raised over $8,000.00 and we look forward to surpassing that mark this year.  After dates are approved by city counsel we will post the information for everyone to see.

Governor Vetoes House Bill 988

For those of you who haven't heard, Governor Jindal has vetoed HB988 (5yr DROP). He had no problem with the portion of the bill pertaining to us, but with the amendment increasing retirement benefits for certain employees in Paroles and Probations. He doesn't even mention us in his Veto Message.

5 Year Drop

HB988, our five year drop bill has passed all the way through the process.  It was amended on the senate floor Friday and returned to the house for concurrence.  This afternoon the house vote unanimously to concurr with the amended bill.  The amendment does not affect our portion of the bill.  It pertains to the probation and parole officers pension.

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - A Memorial Day house fire trapped a pregnant woman and her 2-year-old son in a bedroom. The Lake Charles Fire Department rescued them, but it wasn't easy. New Farmington Hills fire chief takes command

Jon Unruh grew up in Farmington Hills and cut his firefighter teeth as a paid on-call firefighter for his hometown department. Some 28 years later Unruh is officially running the department. Unruh, hired last month to replace the retired Corey Bartsch, took the reins as the sixth fire chief in Farmington Hills history Monday after being sworn in by city Clerk Pam Smith.

Several Tigers players and various members of the Tigers organization were at the fire department headquarters to deliver a present to Fire Chief Shadd Whitehead.

There is an important Appropriations Committee public hearing on Tuesday, February 9th at 1600 hrs. to discuss cuts to the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection budget. One of our concerns is the consolidation of funds which zeroes out the line item for the Connecticut State Firemen's Association. Benefits for LODD, disability benefits, and beneficiary benefits.

The 5th Annual Fire on Ice brought in close to $13,000k for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!!! That is 5k more than last year! This would not of been possible without our generous sponsors and spectators!! The Glacier Ice Rink was packed with fans !! Thanks to PBR, Big Sky Brewery and The Front Brewery for the donated beer!! Alright now for the games.

This past week your Union officers were in Tallahassee for the FPF Legislative Convention.  FPF has been making huge strides in keeping the state from tampering with our FRS retirement.  This year there was no attack to the FRS.  Also, they have been working on HB345 and SB456 which deals with the Presumptive Cancer laws for Firefighters.

Lansing Fire Fighter Loses Battle with Cancer

The members of Local 421-Lansing are mourning the passing of active Captain Steve Babcock. Steve was assigned to the LFD Emergency Management Division. He served Lansings residents since 6/7/1993.
